BROKEN

A broken advertising screen shows a slideshow. Which particular advertisement provoked the viewer?

TWO

2023 - ?

Series dedicated to the duality of my film perception. The so-called Kuleshov effect - the emergence of new meaning from the viewer's comparison of the content of two separate frames edited directly after each other, each of which, when viewed without the other frame, is incapable of manifesting such meaning.

This is something that was never meant to be together. But it turned out to be, and at that moment it ceased to exist separately.

WHAT I SEE. HOW I LOOK.

2023

This is a series of photographs taken in an old abandoned brothel in Berlin, which was set up as a shelter for Ukrainian artists. The first place in this city that became my home for a while, one of many. I don’t think I’ve ever looked worse than I did then. I don’t think I’ve lived in a weirder place than this eclectic grotesque of caryatids in bedrooms and gold convolutions of columns. I shot myself in my room, which had once served as a place of intimate privacy. By the time I got there, there was no trace of that tension in the air. I felt only an endless emptiness.

MIGRATION NOTE

2022 - 2023

This project consists of photographs shot first in 2022, during the period of my forced migration. It includes photos taken in all the places where I was able to live during this year.

The full-scale invasion of Ukraine happened in February. I left the country a month before that. While in Turkey I realized that I would not be able to return soon. I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t even know what country I was going to live in or where I was supposed to go. Every time I feel trapped in a corner, my hand involuntarily reaches for the camera.

END OF THE FILM

2020 - 2021

I studied to be a film director. After graduating, I got a job at the Odessa Film Studio. It was founded in 1913 and is one of the oldest in the world. Reconstructed in 1926, the studio was almost the best in the USSR in terms of technological equipment, had, by all accounts, “improved shooting and lighting equipment, auxiliary enterprises ... laboratories with apparatus of the latest design”. Soon a new film copying laboratory was established, which processed up to 2.5 million meters of film annually, gradually expanding its capacity to 9 million meters.

By the time I got there, all that remained were the ruins of what had once been a huge movie studio. Empty dusty pavilions, a track for driving school students, a graveyard of limousines, and endless old sets that have stood outside for years. They only represent objects they are not, and have never been used for any other purpose. But time and the sea wind have aged them for real, and now you can no longer tell what was decoration and what was actually used. Time has equalized the real and what is made to seem like them. That’s how I saw the death of cinema.

DRINK & SMOKE

2021

I was worried about my differences with my parents. The reason for this always seemed to me to be a generation gap. For years I tried to find a contact, a plane into which we could be equal. Observing with my friends, I noticed that despite the age difference, and a host of resulting differences, we drink and smoke in exactly the same way.
